by Rev. Dan Fugate; Chairperson of the Network Board of Directors
The recipient of the 2022 Thomas Hunstad Award is so accomplished and has provided so much leadership in the church in general and in the area of children, youth, and family ministry in general, that we have a hard time trying to choose what to include and what to leave out. So please know that I am sharing incomplete picture because our recipient is so accomplished.
She began ministry in the Church of God in Christ as a Consecrated Evangelist, Revivalist, Spiritual Counselor, and Youth Retreat Leader, among others things. She authored the book “On the Other Side of Through: My Testimony.”
In 2001, she began developing and leading bible studies for an ELCA mission start and through the working of the Holy Spirit, a community of faith, and a whole lot of hard work on her part, she was ordained a Minister of Word and Sacrament in 2008.
Since that time she served first as pastor as Trinity Lutheran Church in Germantown and then since 2012 as Pastor of Mediator Lutheran Church in Philadelphia.
Our recipient has served on the SEPA Synod Council, as Executive Director for the African American International Ministry of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity, Chair of her synod’s African Descent Strategic Planning Team, Board of Directors of Urban Seeds, Inc. (a micro lending organization), and currently serves as Dean of the Central Philadelphia Conference of the SEPA Synod.
While there is no doubt she has made a huge impact through her leadership in these important positions, her biggest impact has come through her love for young people, her mentoring of young people, her walking alongside them, her advocating for them. Not only that, but she also has a heart for those who work with young people and she has mentored us, loved us, walked along us, and advocated for us.
In her own synod, she has served as Chaplain for their Synod’s Youth Workers, their Urban Servant Trip, for Youth of Color, and on the Faith Formation Team.
She served on the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering Servant Companion Committee and as a Chaplain for the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston.
Our recipient serve 2 terms on the Network’s Board of Directors and she was part of the team that created and continues to sustain our Multicultural Initiative. On the Board and now, she is a strong advocate for all young people and youth workers in every context across this church.
My son served as a servant companion at the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston and met our recipient. He texted me and said, “Dad, I just met the most amazing pastor.”
Tonight it is my honor and deep personal joy to present the 2022 Tom Hunstad Award to the most amazing pastor: Pastor Regina Goodrich.
